The District of Columbia’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development selected Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS) as a member of the development team for a mixed income affordable residential housing project at the historic Langston & Slater Schools in Ward 5. The completed project will provide new rental and for-sale units.

VOANS, in partnership with like-minded, mission-driven nonprofits including, Douglas Community Land Trust, Habitat for Humanity, Volunteers of America Chesapeake, together with Minority Business Enterprise in CSG Urban will redevelop the schools at 43 P Street, NW, Washington DC. This unique collaboration will provide housing, historic preservation and community services in one of the City’s rapidly developing neighborhoods, Truxton Circle. The project, located at 33-45 P Street, NW, will produce approximately 55 new homes, consisting of townhomes and multifamily rental apartments for families at various levels of affordability. The Langston and Slater Schools were originally built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to educate African American children. They have not been used for their original purpose in over 25 years.

“VOANS is honored to develop its first project in the District of Columbia with such vital community partners. We are looking forward to working in partnership with the residents of this historic neighborhood to help revitalize this site by creating new affordable housing and the economic opportunities that go with it.” said Sharon Wilson Geno, EVP and Chief Operating Officer, Volunteers of American National Services.
