The Gift of a Fresh Start

Life is full of twists and turns, isn’t it? You think it’s going to turn out one way, and then suddenly, everything is different.

That’s exactly how Dana felt after an accident at her construction job led to an addiction to the medicine she was prescribed to manage the pain of her injury. She had a family to take care of, children she loved and wanted to raise.

At her lowest point, her dream of motherhood seemed hopeless. But thanks to generous friends just like you, Dana had somewhere to turn that would give her a fresh start, maker her feel safe, and – most importantly – allow her to both get healthy and continue to care for her kids, all at the same time.

Seeking Help

When she became pregnant with her youngest child, Dana was mere weeks away from losing parental rights to her middle child, because of her untreated substance use disorder. It was a thought too excruciating to bear.

She found VOA just in time. Unlike other recovery programs, Dana was able to keep her children with her while receiving treatment at VOA’s Fresh Start program. “It’s the greatest thing to not have to be separated from your children,” Dana says. “Completing the Fresh Start program changed…my life.”

You Can Help Keep Families Together

Today, because of compassionate neighbors like you, Dana and her three children are still together and thriving! Through her work as a Peer Recovery Coach for VOA, Dana gives back by helping other mothers just like her stay connected with their children while they work toward a healthier, happier life.

Every Gift Makes a Difference

As the end of the year approaches, many people wonder what they can do to help those hurting and in need in their communities and across the country. Whether you fill a backpack for underprivileged children so they can achieve their academic goals or volunteer your time or resources to support veterans struggling with homelessness, your help can make a difference. Here are a few other ways you can support VOA, and together we can provide essentials for those in need and hope for those hurting.

Donor Advised Funds

The increasing popularity of donor advised funds (DAFs) means more people contribute to them. If you have established a DAF account, please consider requesting a distribution to VOA so you an continue helping neighbors in need.

We are so thankful for people like you who are willing to partner with us to continue the assistance programs VOA offers to individuals and families. We would love to have a chance to express our gratitude and share how your contribution makes a difference.

You Can Have a Big Impact

You may be wondering what you can do to make a difference in the lives of your loved ones as well as those who need help the most in your community. With a little planning, you can accomplish both of those goals, and it may be easier than you think.

It Starts with a Will

A will is an essential tool for taking care of those important to you. After providing for loved ones, you can make a gift, or bequest, to VOA.

A bequest is a transfer of property through a will. There are a few different forms of bequests, and you can decide whether a charitable gift should only be made from what remains after your other beneficiaries have received their gifts, or you may choose to leave a specific amount or asset for charitable purposes.
