WHO WE ARE

Adopt a family. Get involved. Change a life. For over 125 years, we have taken on the most difficult tasks to uplift and empower Michigan’s residents. Giving purpose. Restoring dignity. Providing shelter. Maintaining independence. Volunteers of America always step forward to help communities in times of need.

The name Volunteers of America was selected when the organization was founded over 125 years ago. It signified an organization of people who voluntarily chose to help others. In those days, a volunteer was anyone who was committed to a mission or cause. Since its earliest days, when Volunteers of America brought food, medicine, and comfort to people not served by other charities, volunteering has been instrumental in every aspect of the organization’s ministry of service.

Today, our services are delivered through a partnership of professional staff, volunteers, and other community supporters.

Mariela wanted a better life for her family and was doing everything she could to make it happen. She was working and going to school full-time on top of trying to take care of her family. After almost a year of being stretched to the max, she was feeling burned out. If something didn’t change, Mariela’s goal of becoming a nurse and giving her son a better future would never become a reality.
