Hundreds of Maine Veterans are homeless. These statistics need to change.

Volunteers of America Northern New England has worked tirelessly to find ways to shelter and care for the men and women who have served our country. They are thrilled to announce their Cabin in the Woods Community. It’s the first project of its kind in the state of Maine, and the only program in Maine that will house homeless male and female veterans and their families. They will be constructing 21 energy-efficient, ADA-accessible residential cabins (16 one-bedroom and 5 two-bedroom), with special attention to maintaining a rustic, wooded, private setting for each. Also on site will be a two-bedroom cabin for office and community space.

With an emphasis on family reunification and employment, Cabin in the Woods will work with many local, regional, state, and federal agencies to meet the needs of veterans and their families. The project’s $4.2 million development cost will be funded primarily by Maine Housing Tax Credit Allocation. Volunteers of America Northern New England has also partnered with the Veterans Administration to secure a 75-year lease on the land. The Home Depot Foundation is generously funding a portion of the cabin construction costs.

The Home Depot® Foundation announced a $200,000 grant to the Cabin in the Woods project to address the critical housing needs of Maine’s military veterans. This was part of a $1.37 million dollar commitment from the organization for new grants to Volunteers of America to address the critical need for housing and services for U.S. military veterans.

“The Home Depot® Foundation is committed to ensuring that every veteran has a safe place to call home — not just through financial donations, but also through the dedication and hands-on service of our store associates,” said Anne Marie Gordon, Manager of the Lewiston/Auburn Home Depot store.”

We at Volunteers of America are truly fortunate and very proud to have a strong partnership with The Home Depot® Foundation and the Team Depot employees in Maine, who have volunteered many hours to improve our Northern New England veteran program facilities. Together, with their incredible support and generosity, we have made an important difference in the lives of the homeless veterans we serve.
