Roger’s Story

My name is Roger.

I was homeless at birth and found myself homeless many decades later, sleeping in a small bunch of palm trees near a parking lot. But my life wasn’t always that way.

After being adopted from an orphanage and working my way through school, I went on to get a masters in clinical psychology, enlisted in the service and served during the Korean War, got married and had children, even secured a great job teaching at a university. But alcohol got the better of me, and I lost everything. A 16-year stint of homelessness sure can give you a different perspective on life.

I was lucky enough to find a home with Volunteers of America. I’m sober now and enjoy bringing my fellow residents their mail and newspapers if they are unable to get it for themselves. I have a family now and we all live together in a Volunteers of America home.
