American society faces an enormous cultural shift, sparked by our rapidly-aging population, which will affect workplaces, healthcare and public policy for years to come. Today, women over age 60:

On May 10, 2011 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Volunteers of America will host its third-annual discussion on aging issues featuring guests such as panelists Arianna Huffington, co-founder/editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post; Debra Ness, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families; Mike King, National President and CEO of Volunteers of America, Inc.; Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, Executive Vice President of Multicultural Markets and Engagement for AARP; and medical journalist/best-selling author Dr. Bob Arnot as moderator.

This event concludes Volunteers of America’s year-long national dialogue on Women and Aging, targeting the significance of aging women in the home, workplace and broader community. We will focus specifically on the impact this has on our nation’s public policy.

Arianna Huffington is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, a nationally syndicated columnist and author of 13 books. She is also co-host of Left, Right and Center, public radio’s popular political roundtable program. In 2006, she was named to the Time 100, Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. In 2009, she was named as one of the most influential women in media by Forbes magazine and to the Financial Times’ list of 50 people who shaped the decade.
Debra Ness, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families
For over two decades, Debra Ness has been an ardent advocate for the principles of fairness and social justice. Drawing on an extensive background in health and public policy, Ness possesses a unique understanding of the issues that face women and families at home, in the workplace, and in the health care arena. Ness has played a leading role in positioning the National Partnership as a powerful and effective advocate for today’s women and families.
Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, Executive Vice President of Multicultural Markets and Engagement for AARP
Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez has been a leader in the nonprofit, government and corporate sectors for more than 30 years. Before joining AARP, she was New York’s Secretary of State, the first Hispanic to serve in that role. Cortés-Vázquez also served as president of the Hispanic Federation, a nonprofit network of 90 Latino health and human service agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, aiding more than 2 million Latinos annually.
Mike King, National President and CEO of Volunteers of America
Michael ("Mike") King, former chief executive officer (CEO) of the organization’s local office in Texas, began his tenure as Volunteers of America’s new national president in July 2010. King now leads Volunteers of America as it continues to expand existing services to needy Americans and addresses the needs of seniors through Aging with Options™, a new initiative focused on innovative services for a rapidly growing number of aging Americans.

Bob Arnot is a physician and international humanitarian with a hunger for knowledge and a desire to introduce audiences to important issues and exotic locations around the world. He is one of the most recognized names in medical and health professions, having served as the former chief medical editor and special foreign correspondent for NBC News. He recently worked with Google to produce a series of educational videos on chronic illnesses that are viewable on YouTube.
