Volunteering: A Life-Time of Positive Returns

Chuck Gould, National CEO of Volunteers of America, discusses our collaboration with the Major League Baseball Players Trust that encourages high school students to volunteer by creating Action Teams, groups of students volunteering in their communities to help those in need. The ballplayers and students work together to establish meaningful volunteer projects, encourage community involvement and make a lasting impact in the lives of others.

One recent Action Team volunteer project occurred in New Orleans at the reopening of The Terraces on Tulane, a senior housing facility for those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The students created Welcome Home kits for the seniors and even went door-to-door delivering them. It was a wonderful example of an inter-generational program that encouraged seniors to engage with youth while enabling the students to experience the joy of volunteering in the hope that it fosters a life-long practice of giving back to their communities.
