Honoring Those Who Serve


To commemorate 9/11 and honor the men and women who serve our country, Volunteers of America participated in The Home Depot Foundation’s 2nd Annual Celebration of Service, which was a sixty day campaign that ran from September 11 to Veterans Day. The Home Depot associates completed 350 service projects to transform the homes and lives of veterans across the country.

Since April 2011, we have partnered with The Home Depot Foundation to provide quality homes to veterans and their families nationwide and we enjoyed working again with The Home Depot associates during Celebration of Service to improve homes, facilities and community centers where veterans and their families live and receive services.

Nationwide projects this year we participated in took place in the following states:


Volunteers of America Florida (September 12)
Phyllis Gallant, a WWII veteran, in Tampa received a home makeover including landscaping, plastering, painting, paving and more. 

Volunteers of America of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho (September 19-20)
The Rest & Recoup and Eagles’ Rest homes for formerly homeless veterans received improvements including weatherization, window treatment, bike racks and other major enhancements of both properties.

Volunteers of America Northern New England (September 21)
At the Arthur B. Huot Veterans Housing in Saco (Maine), improvements included a new screen house, a renovated shed and painting the inside common areas. Additionally, the Veterans’ Career House in Biddeford had external cleaning completed as well as general building and landscaping improvements.

Volunteers of America Southwest California (September 26)
At the Hawley Center in El Cajon, ADA ramps were installed, interior and exterior painting was completed, flooring was installed, windows were weatherized, doors were secured, the kitchen was upgraded and the “Victory” garden was refreshed.

Volunteers of America Colorado Branch (October 3)
In Denver, a Korean War veteran and Meals on Wheels client received a home renovation complete with a new kitchen, new bathroom, new carpet, fresh paint and updated landscaping.

Volunteers of America Michigan (October 9)
The Niles Veterans Housing revitalization project included beautification around the program’s new parking lot as well as the installation of an ADA ramp, the building of a retention wall, exterior handrails were updated and rear decking was improved for preservation. 

Volunteers of America Greater New York (October 11)
The East 119th Street Veterans’ Residence project included a multitude of renovations from a memorial in the back yard to the planting of flowers and trees and the building an outdoor basketball court – just to mention a few. Team Depot began landscaping Thursday, October 11 and will volunteer every Thursday through Veterans Day to complete the projects.

Volunteers of America Massachusetts (October 16)
At the Hello House for Men in Boston, rooms were combined in order to create more space for counseling sessions and increase organization and flow on the first floor. 

Volunteers of America Greater Los Angeles (October 18)
At the S.H.A.W.L. House (Support for Harbor Area Women’s Lives) in San Pedro, the Home Depot's Women in Leadership Project renovated transitional housing for female veterans and their children

Volunteers of America Greater Ohio (November 8)
Various rooms at the Veterans Resource Center in Cleveland were repainted among other work done to beautify the building.

Volunteers of America North Louisiana (November 9)
The Veterans Transitional Living Facility in Shreveport had a pavilion constructed and other exterior enhancements completed for the residents’ enjoyment.

Volunteers of America Colorado Branch (November 13) 
At the Durango Community Shelter, improvements made included the replacement of tiling and trim, kitchen cabinets, drawers, hinges and more. View photos from the event.
