Featured Program: RSVP

Several days each week, Margaret Wood works as a receptionist at the Volunteers of America Colorado Branch office in Denver. She is outgoing, hardworking and efficient. She recognizes repeat callers by their voices. She has a keen memory, and can recall details of every incoming message. When she is away from the switchboard, she stays busy stuffing envelopes for fundraising efforts and special events.

What sets Margaret apart? She happens to be over 80 years old and legally blind. She is part of a growing number of seniors that has become a new force in American society: elderly volunteers. Margaret serves her community through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) — the Corporation for National Service’s oldest and largest senior volunteer program.

Wood says she has a deep need within herself to be useful, and finds fulfillment and satisfaction in helping others. “You know, we all have a purpose in this world, and mine is to be a volunteer,” she said.
